Why does Verona need an educational foundation? For Verona schools to continue providing Verona students with the best possible educational opportunities, financial means other than tax revenue are needed. VFEE allows for corporate support and maximum tax benefit. Private resources can play an important role in providing new and important opportunities for learning and teaching. In addition, in areas of technology, the private sector is in the best position to provide funds and in-kind gifts to help keep students on the cutting edge. What is the purpose of VFEE? The purpose of VFEE is to attract and distribute private gifts of cash and property to and for the exclusive use of students of the Verona School District. Who is involved in directing VFEE? VFEE is managed and directed by a group of private citizens (trustees) representing many segments of the area's business, cultural, civic, and educational leadership. Is the Board of Education and Administration involved with VFEE? Yes. The superintendent and a representative of the Board of Education sit as permanent, ex-officio trustees. However, the vast majority of the trustees are not directly connected with the school district except as citizens interested in and committed to the betterment of public education. Who decides what projects and programs the foundation will support? Essentially, the trustees decide what is to be funded. Donors, however, may direct their contributions to specific areas. In addition. the Board of Education has the final legal say in accepting or rejecting any gift from the foundation. Will teachers have a say in how funds are spent? Yes. A "peer review" group, composed primarily of teachers, assists the foundation by reviewing grants and making recommendations to the Board of Trustees. In addition, most grant applications come directly from the teachers. As of December 2008, over $80,000 has been granted to the Verona Public Schools from VFEE. Will other school-related groups such as parent-teacher groups be involved with the foundation? Yes. VFEE is not intended to replace parent-teacher groups, booster clubs, etc., and seeks to collaborate with other organizations. In addition, VFEE may serve as a fiduciary agent. Currently, VFEE is the fiduciary for the Turf Field iniative. What is the cost of running a foundation? Very little because the foundation is volunteer-based. Over 90% of the money raised goes directly to the Verona Schools. |
