Academic Enhancement Fund

The key to scholastic excellence is more than just the rote memorization of facts and figures. Students benefit most when immersed in a variety of learning situations. To achieve this goal, VFEE encourages programs that look beyond the bricks and mortar of the classroom. The Academic Enhancement Fund stimulates the examination of bold ideas, questions and concepts outside, but related to, the core curriculum.

Last fall in an example of a VFEE-funded project, the entire student body at H.B. Whitehorne Middle School took part in an unusual science, math, social studies and art lesson when VFEE financed a live hot air balloon demonstration. Each grade level participated in the demonstration. Inside of a partially inflated balloon set up in the school's gymnasium, the students viewed a slide show presented by Pilot Bob Mueller of Liberty Balloon Company. Bob Mueller answered their many questions before bringing them outside to observe the 20-foot flames necessary to heat the air mass in the interior of a typical balloon.
